Equines Adoption Process

Looking to Adopt?

  • Step 1

View the animals currently up for adoption by visiting our Adoption page here. You can also follow our George or Mossel Bay Facebook page where we regularly post images and updates on the animals as they become ready for adoption.

  • Step 2

All adoptions are completed in person at our premises. This helps us assess your suitability and match you to the right selection of potential pets. This may be done be appointment only.

  • Step 3

An adoption application will then be completed in person.

  • Step 4

A home check is done to ensure that your home will be suitable for the animal.

  • Step 5

Once your application is approved and the animal is ready, the adopter can fetch their new equine/farm animal or the SPCA can transport for them at a pre-arranged time at a cost of R8.00 per kilometre (both ways).

This depends on the age, size, condition, and rideability of the animal.

These are guidelines, depending on the gender of the animal and whether castration is required:

Ponies/Donkeys: R1,000 to R1,500
Horses: R2,000 – R4,000 – This includes deworming, Flu vac, microchip and tetanus.

Home check

Once you’ve decided which equine you’d like to adopt, one of our pre-placement officers will visit your stable or home. This ensures that your property is a suitable match for the animal concerned. We take into account:

• Other animals in the family.

• Children’s ages

• Level of experience to adopt

• No equine will be adopted out to a property where there is a stallion

• Size of property

The following are also considered as criteria for adoption

• You must be over 18 to adopt.

• Your property must be fully enclosed.

• There must be adequate shelter

• You must be able to afford a private vet and have transport to take the animal to the vet.
