We provide care for animals in need, and facilitate good adoptions… but there’s a lot more to our work than that!
Many thanks to Adin Walls who made this beautiful video of our SPCA and its staff

One of the most important functions of the SPCA inspectors is to do proactive work in the townships.
Cruelty and neglect doesn't always come and knock on our doors. We have to be proactive and work in all the areas, searching for all types of animal issues.
The horrendous neglect and abuse we see every day is a direct result of an overpopulation of animals. Particularly in underprivileged areas, animals that become sick or contract mange are often abandoned and simply replaced by a new one.
But it’s not just the older and diseased animals… there are also countless puppies and kittens on the streets, unwanted. Sterilisation is crucial to the prevention of cruelty to animals. Your donations enable our team to sterilise pets in these underprivileged areas, and to help prevent the growing number of unwanted animals.
Municipal pound services
We also serve as the animal pound for the
George and Mossel Bay Municipalities.
Lost and found
Whether you’ve lost your beloved pet, or you’ve found someone's pet wandering around, contact us immediately.
As part of our service to the community, we run pounds on behalf of the George and Mossel Bay Municipalities. This means that all stray animals must be handed in to the Garden Route SPCA and cannot be kept by the founder. Stray animals are kept in the pound for 7 days. Animals that have not been claimed by their owners within this 7-day period become available for adoption by a new family. Animals with name tags and micro–chips are much easier to re-unite with their owners. We also strongly recommend sterilising your animals – sterilised animals are less likely to roam and go missing.
Microchip your pet at your local SPCA branch
This will ensure that pets found are re-homed as soon as possible, with the minimal amount to stress for the pet and the owner.
1 in 3 pets will get lost. Without ID, 90% will not return home.
Without doubt, knowledge is the most valuable instrument of change. Our education unit is dedicated to empowering people in underprivileged areas with the knowledge of responsible pet care. Children are educated through fun puppet shows, talks and contests, while adults are educated through our unique Community Carers initiative.
This programme includes presentations on mange, worms, common animal illnesses, animals and the law, proper pet care and sterilisations. We also appoint suitable local residents as SPCA Community Carers who can call on us when there’s a sick, abandoned, or abused animal in need of help in their neighbourhood.
Professional boarding kennels
Both George and Mossel Bay SPCA offer excellent boarding facilities at competitive rates. With the requisite vaccinations, your pets can be safely boarded while you’re away.
SPCA Members save R3 per day.
The SPCA has the power to protect all animals from abandonment, abuse, and neglect under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
When there is a deliberate act of violence against an animal, or an extreme case of neglect, we have the power to prosecute the perpetrators under this act. Your donations can help us when we need reward money to get leads that will help us get dog-fighting syndicates into court, or to track down the perpetrators of particularly unspeakable cruelty.
